Why Private Pay Exists
Most non-emergency medical transportation in the United States is paid for by Medicaid and managed-care plans through brokers. The system works for routine, scheduled trips when the member is eligible and the ride can be booked days ahead. It does not work when a patient is discharged tonight, when a specialist is out of network or out of state, when the passenger needs a specific vehicle, or when the person needing the ride simply is not covered. Private pay fills that gap. You call one company, that company dispatches the vehicle, and the accountability for the ride sits with the people who took your booking.

What Affects the Price of a Private Pay Ride
We do not publish rate cards because two rides that look similar on paper rarely cost the same. The quote your coordinator gives you is built from five things: the distance and route, the vehicle class, whether the driver waits and brings you home or returns later, the time of day and notice given, and any special assistance such as stairs, oxygen or a bariatric transfer. It means the patient or family pays the transportation company directly instead of a Medicaid plan, an insurer or a broker paying on their behalf. You choose the provider, the vehicle and the timing, and the company you call is the company that dispatches the ride.
Who uses private pay NEMT?
Patients without a transportation benefit, patients whose benefit does not cover the trip (out of network, out of state, a companion, a same-day discharge), and families who have a benefit but need a ride they can rely on for a specific appointment. Facilities also book private pay transport for discharges and transfers.
Does Crown Care NEMT accept insurance, Medicare or Medicaid?
No. Crown Care NEMT is 100% private pay. We do not bill insurance, and we do not work through brokers. That is what allows same-day availability, vehicle choice and a two-hour confirmation.
How much does private pay medical transportation cost?
Every ride is quoted individually from the distance, the vehicle class, waiting or return time, and any special assistance. There are no published rates and no hidden fees. Requesting a quote is free and carries no obligation.
When do I pay for a private pay ride?
Nothing is charged when you request a quote. Once you accept the quote and the ride is confirmed, a card authorization is placed. The charge is processed within 24 hours after the ride is completed, adjusted down if the ride runs shorter than quoted.
Can I get a receipt for reimbursement or a flexible spending account?
Yes. Every completed ride comes with an itemized receipt showing the date, route, vehicle class and total, which many families submit to an FSA, HSA or long-term-care policy.
